Chapter Thirteen

WHEN WE ARRIVED, Paula was seated in the crumbling wicker rocking chair on her front porch, sipping amber liquid from a jelly glass.

She waved the glass at us as we climbed the steps. “From my private wine cellar…which contains half a pint of bourbon. Want some?”

“I’m tipsy enough from smelling your breath, thanks,” I replied, flapping a hand to dissipate the fumes. “Dang, Paula, it’s not even noon.”

“Where is it?” Cal shouted to make himself heard above the pounding from the roof. Mac and Peter, squatted on opposite sides of the steep pitch, paid no attention to us as they replaced shingles with machine-like efficiency.

Paula rose, a bit unsteadily, and preceded us into the house. We followed her up the stairs, Cal’s arms extended in readiness to catch her if she stumbled.

“In there,” she said, pointing in the direction of her studio.

We entered the small room together, me clutching Cal’s arm. I gasped. He uttered an obscenity.

GET OUT

The words were scrawled in letters two feet high across one wall in bright red paint that had dribbled down the partially peeled wallpaper.
